The trains, the trains, the fucking trains.

So, the NJ Transit commuting nightmare continues.  From today until September 1st (fingers crossed), my train line to Penn Station is closed. Closed.  Done.  Gonezo.

One of the reasons we chose this town was proximity to the city.  An easy commute.  You can walk to the train from my house and are in NYC within 30 minutes.

I recently changed careers and only got professionally licensed in NY, because I thought it would be a better balance for me.  To work in the city while living out here.  And then this shit happened.  My husband works in NYC, we have 2 young kids, and there is no way we could both commute.

For me, this train closure feels like I can’t get home.  I am literally and figuratively cut-off.  I already hated NJ Transit, for the “I hate taking it back at night after seeing friends in the city and I have to time my departure” reason.  But now, it has limited job options for me.  I currently can’t work, and that’s been so frustrating (but I guess also given me time and mental space to do this blog haha).  And just generally added to my ihatenj thing where I feel isolated and alone and find myself driving around the suburbs and missing “home” and asking what is going on in my life.

And my story is bubkis compared to people’s stories.  I’ve heard crazy nightmare 3 hours each way commutes.  I know people who no longer see their kids M-F.  Everyone is just trying to make it work and it sucks so much.

I also know the MTA is in a state of emergency also so the grass is not always greener.  And I just read an article about how people are losing jobs and missing appointments due to delays, especially in poorer communities – so yeah, mine are total high class problems, but still.  It’s a total shit show and I sorta feel like an asshole talking about all of it but this blog is ihatenj and for many people, this has been super hard, so recognize.

So, for today, ihatenj is officially ihatenjtransit.  I hope everyone is safe and calm and most importantly avoiding smelly, sweaty people on the train.  And grabbers.

Ciao, Lauren xx

One more pic of these asshole trains!
